vRanger Pro

Hot Image Backup and Restore for Both Virtual and Physical Machines

Today, thousands of virtual machines support critical business applications. These virtualized environments require solid backup and recovery strategies, or companies run the risk of weeks of downtime and lost revenues. However, most current backup processes are less than ideal. Powering down virtual machines for backups incurs downtime, while placing agents within each virtual machine for hot backups can become very expensive and hard to maintain. To save time, many companies rely solely on partial file-level backups. Until vRanger Pro, backup-and-recovery strategies for virtual machines were incomplete, hard to manage and costly.

Support Disaster Recovery and Reduce Downtime

vRanger Pro is the recognized industry-standard backup and restore solution for virtualized environments. Administrators can schedule regular image-level backups of virtual or physical machines—while the machine is still running. Images can be stored either locally in the SAN or sent as compressed files over a WAN to remote locations to support disaster recovery strategies. vRanger Pro also enables restore of individual files efficiently with an explorer tree through which users can easily identify and "grab" needed files. With an easy-to-use graphical interface, startup wizards, and VirtualCenter integration, vRanger Pro makes business continuity accessible to every level administrator. vRanger Pro also leverages the advanced technology of vConverter [10] to provide image-level backups of Windows-based physical servers without agents and without disrupting the source machine.

Features and Benefits:

  • Performs entire image or partial differential backup
  • Integrates with VCB to offload backups from the host
  • Offers full VMware VirtualCenter integration
  • Follows virtual machines when moved to new hosts
  • Includes VSS driver to provide "transactionally consistent" backup images
  • Compresses files so they can be sent over LANs/WANs to remote locations
  • Contains P2V disaster recovery for image-level backups of physical machines
  • Includes database repository to capture trending metrics
  • Restores a virtual machine or files from within a virtual machine
  • Offers improved compression for faster backups
  • Provides startup wizard for even easier implementation

vMigrator

Migration from VMware® ESX Server 2.5x to VMware Infrastructure 3
Migrating virtual machines from the ESX Server 2.5x platform to VI3 can be complicated, incur substantial downtime, and lower business productivity. vMigrator is designed to eliminate the challenges associated with porting VMs to a new platform.

vMigrator Keeps Your Business Operational During the Migration Process
vMigrator is a GUI-driven management tool that is easy to use with minimal training. During the migration process, the source virtual machines remain intact and unmodified. The existing production environment can still be used by the workforce, even as individual virtual machines are being replicated and ported to the new production server. Because the source retains its integrity until the cutover to the new server is completed, administrators can leverage this feature to support rollback contingency plans. The destination virtual machine is also migrated in a consistent state, keeping all data intact. This migration process allows downtime to be minimized—even for complex environments—to a simple required reboot at the end of the upgrade process, which can be as little as 60 seconds. A scheduling function allows administrators to control reboots in strict timetables to plan downtime. vMigrator will also automate the upgrade of VMware Tools and the management of the IP address.

Features and Benefits:

  • Allows migration to VI3 with minimal downtime
  • Includes migration of VMX hardware and VMware Tools
  • Migrates multiple virtual machines simultaneously
  • Provides scheduling options to control timing of reboots
  • Allows source virtual machine to be used continuously during migration
  • Maintains integrity of source and destination virtual machines
  • Reduces migration downtime from hours to a 60-second reboot
  • Offers easy-to-use Windows®-based GUI that any level IT administrator can use
  • Includes proven, real-world Quest Software technology that eliminates scripting
  • Requires no SAN

vReplicator

Host-level Replication and Fail-over Testing for Critical Virtual Machines
Hardware failure is a fact of life and often costs companies time and money. In the event of a failure, replication of entire LUNs creates many problems, such as heavy network traffic, additional hardware requirements and other costly maintenance items involved with hardware-level replication.

Selective Replication of Virtual Machines is the Answer
vReplicator is the leading replication solution for VMware Virtual Infrastructure. vReplicator is installed to a centralized server, and does not need to be installed on either the source or target virtual machines, eliminating licensing costs, management and maintenance involved with agent-based solutions. With vReplicator, the entire virtual machine is replicated, including configuration settings, patches to the OS, and the applications themselves, as well as the data and all other OS-level changes. Being able to replicate an entire virtual machine in real-time allows the applications to have the data and all the underlying OS configurations in the event of a failure. Selectively replicating virtual machines from a LUN reduces the cost of replication and opens the door to replicating Tier 2 and Tier 3 applications as well.

Features and Benefits:

  • Replicates entire image of virtual machine, including OS, configuration settings and data volumes for VI3
  • Enables ability to select individual critical virtual machines
  • Reduces costs and maintenance of destination virtual machines with closed target VMs and supports replication to dissimilar hardware
  • Resynchronizes automatically on fractured replication jobs
  • Replicates over the LAN or WAN without dependency on the SAN
  • Offers easy-to-use centralized Windows®-based GUI with VirtualCenter integration and Job Wizards for ease of use
  • Works with VMotion and DRS
  • Provides GUI-assisted fail-over testing
  • Focuses on stability and scalability of replication job management

vCharter

Real-time Monitoring, Alerting, Reporting and Chargeback Solution
vCharter is the only comprehensive monitoring tool for VMware ESX Server that goes "under the hood" to provide a real-time and historical monitoring and performance control solution for your virtual environments. By comparison, most monitoring solutions for virtualized environments don’t go far enough. They emulate the physical world in trying to collect metrics "inside the guest" operating system. vCharter is the only solution that pulls together all the features needed for true monitoring of virtual environments to enable informed decision making.

Get All the Information You Need with One Tool
vCharter provides a top-down view of the virtual infrastructure in a drill-down display of performance that shows each level of the environment, beginning with the container level. The container level presents a rolled-up layer of performance for the hosts within the container, while the host-level view follows the container level and demonstrates vital statistics for each of the virtual machine guests in a holistic view. Because vCharter runs centrally, it can provide a comprehensive view across the entire virtual infrastructure as a whole system to help identify bottlenecks and other problems. In addition to performance monitoring, vCharter offers the leading chargeback solution for the VMware ESX Server environment. vCharter can be configured with cost properties at the Global, Host, and VM level to accurately capture the costs for a given environment and apportion those costs to VMs based on utilization.

Features and Benefits:

  • Provides both “real-time” and historical monitoring of hosts and virtual machines without agents
  • Monitors and sets threshold alerts and actions
  • Integrates chargeback engine with reporting for segmenting virtual machine cost structure
  • Provides top-down multi-level view that easily allows administrators to identify bottlenecks or other problems
  • Includes a database repository to capture trending metrics for fine-tuning performance
  • Offers easy-to-use centralized Windows®-based GUI for any level IT administrator
  • Allows drilling-down and viewing processes running in Windows virtual machines
  • Supports data export and pre-defined intervals to exchange data with ERP systems

vPackager

Highly Efficient Virtualization Collaboration for VMware and Microsoft
Synchronizing changes to develop or test against common platforms is one of the major challenges in using VMs for development or testing. As virtual machines proliferate, the difficulty of maintaining synchronicity and distributing changes limits the productivity of a distributed workforce.

Distribute Compressed Packages for Synchronicity
vPackager enables highly efficient VM collaboration and sharing by eliminating the base OS requirement and compacting the Snapshot* or Differencing** files into optimized packages or virtual appliances that can be measured in megabytes, not gigabytes. With vPackager, customers can configure a Windows-based VM with the applications and configurations they wish to distribute, then extract these changes to a compressed package. This package can be distributed without OS licensing implications and applied to similar VMs to merge the changes. The downstream user or recipient requires only a similar base image (not a binary replica) to apply the incoming package/virtual appliance in order to obtain the desired environment.

* Snapshot: For VMware, a snapshot is a picture of your system at the time the snapshot is taken. Snapshot files contain only the changes that have occurred to the VM since the last snapshot was taken.

** Differencing Disk: For Microsoft, a differencing disk provides a way to allow multiple VMs to share a base configuration. Only the differences in each VM need to be saved, and those differences are saved in a local differencing file.

Features and Benefits:

  • Introduces virtual appliances for Windows
  • Decouples base image operating system from distribution package
  • Removes additional Windows licensing requirements
  • Uses advanced algorithms for differencing disk and snapshot file compaction and optimization
  • Facilitates field distribution/support of VMs
  • Assists with decentralized lab management
  • Removes Differencing Disk and Snapshot inefficiencies
  • Flexible licensing for Creator and Reader editions
